Hardware fails, laptops get stolen and ransomware encrypts files. The question is not if you will need a backup, but when. The 3-2-1 rule is a simple, proven strategy.
3 copies of your data
Keep your original data plus at least two backup copies.
2 different types of storage
Store backups on at least two different media – for example, a network storage device (NAS) and a cloud service – so a single failure can't wipe out everything.
1 copy off-site
Keep at least one copy away from your premises. Fire, flood or theft at your office should never take your backups with it.
Don't forget to test
A backup you have never restored is only a hope. Schedule regular test restores to confirm your data can actually be recovered – and how long it takes.
